Carlisle City drew 1-1 with high-flying West Auckland – but it was a game the Cumbrians should have won.
City missed a host of chances, including a penalty five minutes from the end, and had to settle for a point.
West Auckland admitted they were lucky to get away with a point and if City had been able to secure the win they would have been right on their tails in the play-off hunt.
James Harrison had given West Auckland the lead from a seventh minute penalty, and although they looked sharp at times, weren’t often able to cause City any defensive problems.
City equalised five minutes into the second half through Keighran Kerr and then should have put the game to bed. But a series of missed chances – one on ones with the keeper – and finally a penalty blazed over by Jordan Irving left them having to settle for a point.
They have a massive game on Tuesday night when they host Redcar Athletic, hot favourites to win the League. They currently lead the table with only one defeat in 15 games but City boss Dan Kirkup hopes to give them a hard game at Gillford Park in mid-week.
