Whitehaven skipper James Newton is in hospital after suffering a neck injury in yesterday’s final game of the season at home to Halifax.
Long-serving Newton, who is in his testimonial year, was helped off the field by medical personnel and although walking off he left The Ortus Rec in an ambulance after the match.
He spent the night in hospital after tests and scans have confirmed Newton has fractured vertebrae in his neck and the club has posted the below update across its social channels this morning.
Any further updates the club can provide will be posted when appropriate and with permission of the player.
The club posted: “Whitehaven Rugby League can this morning provide an update on James Newton.
“Newton has fractured vertebrae in his neck and remains in hospital at this time receiving specialist care but wanted to share this news with the Whitehaven fans and thank all of the well wishers for their support so far.
“All of our thoughts at Whitehaven Rugby League are with our captain, his family and loved ones at this time.”
