It’s safe to say that Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann will be extra keen to see the performance of the referee in their home clash with Barrow tonight.
McCann has been telling Doncaster fans that he had a lengthy chat with EFL head of refereeing Mike Jones after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Chesterfield.
The discussion with Jones was prompted by Rovers being on the wrong end of decisions against the Spireites.
They finished the game with nine men after red cards were shown to both Luke Molyneux and Tom Anderson. The visitors were also awarded a controversial penalty by referee James Bell as well as being denied a stonewaller of their own.
Donny have appealed Anderson’s red card, and McCann said: “I’ve spoken to the head of referees on the penalty incident against Luke Molyneux. He told me it’s not a penalty so I’ve got to go with that.
“I also spoke about the penalty that leads to Chesterfield’s second goal (handball by Ephraim Yeboah) and he told me that’s not a penalty either. I knew that anyway at the time.
“But the referee didn’t give that one so it’s almost as if he’s reverted to the old (advice). It’s gone now. Referees make mistakes but I hope they learn from it.”
A win tonight would put them level on points with Barrow, who currently occupy the final automatic promotion slot.
But McCann has selection issues with a number of players missing tonight and Barrow boss Stephen Clemence will be instructing his team to start on the front foot.
