Carlisle United lost 2-0 in the EFL Trophy at home to Wigan Athletic but the key stats on the night concerned two players returning from injury.

Most interest was in Callum Guy, sidelined for 339 days, who came on after 62 minutes and now comes the assessment of how he came through it and what will be the next stage of his comeback.

Taylor Charters was also given time after returning from a not-as-lengthy absence.

He will also be assessed for any reaction before the youngster is reintroduced to the match-day squad.

It was a night when new manager Mike Williamson had the opportunity to watch a number of younger players including Hayden Atkinson, Seb Mason and Dan Hopper who were all making their senior debuts.

Both Wigan goals came in the first-half with Josh Stones scoring from the spot after seven minutes and Michael Olakigbe knocking in the second from close range after 24 minutes.

Carlisle United – Breeze, Neal (62. Guy), Ellis, Robinson (62, Charters), Mellish (63, Fitzpatrick), Sadi (81, Mason), Dudik, Barclay (81, Hopper), Hetherington, O’Donoghue, Atkinson.

Unused subs – Smith, Davies
