Whitehaven’s injured skipper James Newton is setting himself a challenge to raise money for the Rugby League Benevolent Fund.
The charity reached out to Haven’s captain following his injury in the final game of the season, a home win over Halifax Panthers.
They have helped him out in a number of different ways and have visited him at home as he recovers from his injury.
Whitehaven say: “Newts has been told he can walk 1k a day while in his halo and is challenging himself to do this to try and say thank you to the charity for helping him. The proceeds from the go fund me will be shared between James and the charity!”
Newton, in his testimonial season with Whitehaven, had been taken to hospital after the game and later he reported back: “Basically shattered my neck. Bi-lateral C2 fracture to the vertebrae and undergone surgery for the application of halo ring and vest. I will have the halo on for around eight weeks. I am doing well. Long road to recovery now. Thanks for all of your support.”
Millom-based Newton started his career with Hull FC, had a spell on loan with Workington Town and later joined Whitehaven. He had one more season back at Town before returning to Haven and has done a fine job as captain during difficult times at the Ortus Rec.
