Cleator’s Main Street has closed to all traffic so contractors can improve the road.
Part of a £14.3m Government-funded scheme, the 10-week programme began on the A5086 on September 23 under temporary traffic lights.
Contractors DSD Construction are on site and the full road closure came into force today as the road is not wide enough to allow traffic to pass while work is ongoing.
A path has been provided for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.
Cumberland Council, which is co-ordinating the work, said a diversion route for all traffic is in place.
The work includes significant upgrades, such as road network repairs, drainage replacement, traffic sign updates, and refreshing of road markings.
