Proposals for a controversial car park near a popular Lake District beauty spot will be reconsidered by planners.
The plans for an 150-space car park at Ullock Moss, to the south of Portinscale is on the route to Catbells and the firm behind the scheme said it was a solution to the area’s long-standing parking issues.
The Lingholm Private Trust, which proposed the scheme, said at the time it would carry out additional work to counter some of the arguments put forward by planners to turn it down, the scheme will be resubmitted for a decision.
This week, Mike Anderton, for the applicants, said: “The council has invested public money in bringing forward parking restrictions, enforcing them and providing a shuttle bus service. In isolation these have failed.
“Existing visitors, on average, drive 79 miles to this location. When they find nowhere to park, they don’t just turn for home. They drive unnecessary miles trying to find a space and end up parking inappropriately on the verges.
“This new application shows that the highways authority have exhausted all reasonable and relevant regulatory measures, and the original combined approach is still needed.”
The proposed car park, opposite Nichol End Marina, would include 5% disabled parking, an undercover waiting area for bus users, toilets and links to established and popular walking and cycle routes .
The site is currently used for forestry operations for the next-door woodland.
There have been over 30 submissions to the Lake District National Park Authority, with several lodging objections to the plans.
The Lake District National Park Authority will decide on the application in due course.
