Former Aston Villa coach Stephen Clemence enjoyed a 3-0 win by his Barrow side in last night’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy at Holker Street against Villa’s Under-21s.
It was a comprehensive win for the Bluebirds, although it was a dead rubber for Clemence’s side.
They had taken the lead on two minutes. Barrow countered swiftly and effectively with Dom Telford spotting keeper Sam Proctor off his line and perfecting a precise lob from distance into the back of the net.
Telford might have had another straight afterwards after he was put in on goal by Connor Mahoney but this time he shot straight at Proctor.
It was a powerful start by Barrow and they nearly doubled the lead when a looping header from Katia Kouyate, outside the area, cleared everyone apart from Ethan Amundsen-Day who headed off the line.
It was still 1-0 at half-time after Barrow had virtually dominated throughout, with Villa showing nothing like the appetite for goals which had earned them four in the last game against Bolton.
They did look a little better in the second-half but Barrow increased their lead to 3-0 with goals from set pieces.
Barrow’s man of the match Theo Vassell met a Mahoney corner three quarters of the way into the game, after a superb delivery by the winger.
Less than ten minutes later, Andy Dallas rose highest but his header was blocked by the admirable Proctor but eventually he tapped home a third to give the Bluebirds the margin of victory their play deserved.
