Woes continue for Workington Reds – 13 players on injury list

Workington Reds have suffered more injury woes after last night’s penalty shootout defeat to Whitehaven in the Fred Conway County Cup.

Winners for the last two years, Reds went under after a last-minute goal by Owen Johnston had made it 3-3 after extra time.

It has now been confirmed that Tom Stephenson suffered a head injury and as such will have to conform with protocol, which will mean him missing the next three games.

Manager Mark Fell says he now has 13 first team players suffering injuries and the physio will be trying to work miracles tomorrow night to try and get some available.

Clearly it’s a worrying situation for the Reds, given that they are only a point above the drop zone and Saturday’s opponents FC United of Man are one of those below them.

Two new faces played against Whitehaven last night, ex-Wigan midfielder Ruben Grewal and former Burnley winger Lucas Wane who is currently playing North West Counties football with Longridge Town under ex-Kendal boss Lee Ashcroft.

Both were signed for last night’s game and Grewal scored and generally impressed with Fell planning further talks with the two youngsters, although admitting it’s more experience his squad needs.

You can hear what Mark Fell thinks of the situation below:
