Lakeland Rowing Club crews racked up nine wins at the Head of the Lune races at the weekend, with three families particularly well represented among the medallists.
Members of the Hill, McCumiskey and Lawson households took first places across the boat and age categories at the event organised by Lancaster’s John O’Gaunt Rowing Club.
In the junior J17 class, Micah Wightman won the open singles title and, rowing with Lakeland’s boys’ captain, Sam Hill, also took the doubles.
Girls’ captain Izzie Watson had similar success in the women’s J18 singles and in the doubles with Jyoti Varey, who was taking part in her first ever race for the Derwentwater-based club. Izzie rounded off the day with a third win, in the mixed doubles, with Liam McCumiskey.
Club chair Julia McCumiskey, who is Liam’s mum, said: “It was cold and very wet, testing everyone’s resilience to the limit, but our crews put in some extremely impressive performances.”
In the senior classes, there were first places for Julia rowing with Graeme Mactavish in the open masters E/G and the mixed masters D/E classes.
A coxless quad made up of Celia Whittam; Sam’s mum, Hannah Hill; Clare Lawson and – for her third win of the day – Julia also triumphed in women’s masters D/E.
Meanwhile, Sam’s dad, Alex Hill, tasted success in the open masters A/C coxless quad category alongside Clare’s husband, Steve Lawson; James Waterfield and Simon Bamforth.
