Two Cumbrian venues have made a prestigious list of serving the best Sunday roasts in Britain.
The Good Food Guide has announced its Top 50 Best Sunday Roasts in Britain – and Heft at High Newton, near Grange-over-Sands and the Black Bull at Sedbergh are among the cream of the crop.
It received thousands of nominations from people and said: “Synonymous with tradition and family gatherings and offered everywhere from simple neighbourhood cafes to grand hotel dining rooms, it is obvious from the thousands of nominations received that a Sunday roast is, by far, Britain’s favourite meal with 75% of Good Food Guide readers saying a roast is Britain’s most famous dish.”

James Ratcliffe, co-owner of Sedbergh’s Black Bull, said: “All of us are excited about being listed in the Good Food Guide’s UK Top 50 Sunday Roasts list.
“We’ve worked hard to pull together a menu that showcases the region’s very best produce, much of it sourced from within 10 miles of our kitchen door, including the likes of Roasted Howgill Herdwick, Mansergh Hall Outdoor Reared Pork, White Galloway Beef Rump, and Howgill Hereford Roast Beef.
“We use produce from small farms operated by people we know and trust, and who like us care about what they produce, this care and attention to detail shines through in the quality of the produce our team of chefs has access to, and that’s one of the reasons our Sunday lunch a roaring success.’’

Heft’s co-owners Kevin and Nicola Tickle said: ‘‘Being recognised for the quality of our Sunday Roast – Sunday Service is amazing.
“It’s got a bit of a twist on the traditional roast format, and as you would expect it’s packed with seasonal dishes, perfect for building a bespoke Sunday lunch.
“What’s more, we think it’s one of the best ways of getting friends and family to sit around the table together have some fun and enjoy some quality time together while mixing, matching, and building their own individual menu from a selection of our chef favourites.’’
