After winning Canoe Polo’s Division 2 regional last year, Cumbria entered its first ever Division 1 team into the regional league, playing teams from all over the North West.
Going into the league, the team knew it was going to be a big step up and embraced the challenge.
The team is made up of players from Penrith, Lakeland, and Red Rose Canoe Club.
After playing the first two tournaments of the league with another two to go, they made some great progress.
At last weekend’s tournament, they created some great opportunities for themselves and holding their own in the defence.
The team was not able to win any games, but all games were very close if not leading some at the half-time mark.
It is also the first time Cumbria and Lancaster has had teams in every division of the North West League, which gives players in the region the opportunity to play at a level they feel comfortable and allows progression for players in Canoe Polo, something which clubs are working really hard at achieving.
If anybody is interested in trying Canoe Polo or wanting to learn kayaking skills, there are regular sessions in Penrith, Barrow and Kendal.
