Carlisle Cathedral has launched its first ever Christmas tree festival, with 30 trees on display.
The festival was officially opened by High Sheriff of Cumbria Chris Holmes last Sunday December 1, with over 100 invited guests in attendance – many of whom decorated the trees.
The trees, have been decorated to individual themes by local charities, schools and community groups, and add their own Christmas prayer or message to the festival’s community tree.
There is also a festive activity booklet for young visitors to complete, which includes a present treasure.
The festival has been funded by the Cumberland Council Community Investment Fund with sponsorship support from AW Jenkinson Forest Products.
A spokesman for AW Jenkinson said: “We are very proud to help bring Carlisle Cathedral’s first Christmas tree festival to life.
“This is the season for spreading joy, and in these challenging times, a little extra sparkle goes a long way. We hope these trees add some fun and festive cheer, giving everyone a place to come together.”
The Very Rev Jonathan Brewster, Dean of Carlisle, added: “Whether visiting us for the first time or as a regular worshipper you are all very welcome.
“Together we look forward to celebrating the wonderful contributions made to our local community by the charities, organisations and groups that are taking part, each adorning their own tree. If you’re passing by or need space from your Christmas shopping, please make the festival one of your festive traditions this year.”
The festival runs until Tuesday December 31, during normal opening hours, except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Donations are welcome in support of the cathedral.
