The annual Ike Southward Memorial Trophy game is to be staged at the Ortus Rec on Sunday, January 19 (ko 3pm).
The game is a traditional meeting between West Cumbrian rivals Whitehaven and Workington Town and it’s played in memory of one of Cumbria’s greats in Ike Southward.
Whitehaven coach Anthony Murray actually won it last season when he was in charge of Workington Town at the Fibrus Community Stadium. Now he’s trying to win it back for Haven after switching roles with Jonty Gorley.
Town put up a fine performance on their own pitch to win the trophy 36-28 and will be keen to retain the silverware.
Speaking on behalf of Whitehaven, Amanda Morgan said: “We are extremely excited to be hosting the annual Ike Southward game for 2025, It gives us great honour each year to celebrate the great player and gentleman Ike was.
“The start of the 2025 season brings a very unique encounter, with probably the biggest show of Cumbrian talent for a long time. Both clubs’ signings have brought the best of the best from all of our amazing amateur clubs into the semi pro ranks. What a way to celebrate everything Ike gave to the game.
“We would like to thank Workington Town, in particular Graeme Peers and Gary Murdock, for their collaboration in the preparation leading up to this announcement.
“Both clubs will be coming together over the next 12 months to hopefully bring supporters the very best of Cumbrian rugby league moving forward.
“Let’s show everyone what rugby league means to us West Cumbrians with a huge crowd cheering on every player that pulls on Chocolate, Blue & Gold and Blue and White!”
Workington’s interim chairman Graeme Peers said: “On behalf of Workington Town RLFC we are pleased to have worked with Whitehaven RLFC in the preparations for a much-anticipated 2025 Ike Southward Memorial Trophy.
“There is no doubt that this is going to be an excellent showcase of what Cumbrian RL is all about. We’d like to thank Amanda Morgan for her help in formulating a robust agreement that will assist both clubs going forward.
“We urge all RL fans to attend this game and see a huge crowd for what should be a cracking match! “
Entrance on the afternoon will be priced at £15 for adults and concessions with juniors going free for the first West Cumbrian derby of 2025.
