Sport hit hard by Storm Darragh

Sport across the county is likely to be hit hard by the weather over the weekend.

Last night the decision was taken to postpone all West Cumbria Youth League games, whether inside or outside.

Workington Reds’ NPL Premier Division game with Blyth Spartans at Borough Park was postponed after a morning inspection. It will now be rearranged on a new date.

With strong winds and heavy rain forecast, blown in from Storm Darragh, Cumbria was expected to take some of its impact.

It’s not only pitches that could be waterlogged as there are also concerns over possible structural damage.

Carlisle City’s big FA Vase tie at Crook Town was also called-off following a morning inspection after heavy overnight rain. The pitch was waterlogged.

In the Northern League both Cumbrian clubs had their games called off after morning inspections – Penrith v West Auckland and Kendal Town v  Newcastle Blue Star.

It was a similar story in the North West Counties League where Holker Old Boys were due to visit Ashton Athletic but the game was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

In the West Lancashire League Cleator Moor Celtic’s Richardson Cup game at Fulwood Amateur was also postponed.

Carlisle United were told that their game at Newport County had been called off because of concerns for the safety of fans.

In rugby union the Regional 1 North West match is off between Penrith and bottom side Birkenhead Park.

Penrith and the League have been told that Birkenhead Park’s bus company won’t travel in the adverse weather conditions.
