Agencies remain in Kirkby Lonsdale today after a significant fire in the town on Sunday.
A man in his 40s has died.
Cumbria police were contacted by Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service at 5.45am after they were called to a blaze at apartments opposite the Red Dragon pub on Main Street.
The man was found in the three-storey property where the fire started and was declared dead at the scene at around 6.30am.
Main Street remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians and a cordon in place around the affected area.
The cordon will continue to be in place as structural engineers attend and begin assessing the damage to affected buildings.
Structural engineers are already on site assessing the buildings affected.
For any residents, visitors or businesses wanting support or needing help, support is now available at St Mary’s Church, with Westmorland and Furness Council officers available to listen to concerns and provide advice and support.
The council said it will also endeavour to carry out bin collections to planned properties, subject to traffic routes and diversions.
75 firefighters and 10 crews were called to the incident on Sunday morning, plus the aerial ladders from Carlisle and Barrow. Six of the crews were from Cumbria and four from Lancashire.
A number of properties were without water yesterday morning due to the blaze and the fire service began pumping water from the River Lune to help tackle the blaze.
