People who need immediate and urgent access to Kirkby Lonsdale’s Main Street properties are asked to meet tonight so they can be escorted to their properties.

Work is continuing to make the site safe. Due to the urgent work, on site staff only have limited availability to escort people to retrieve urgent belongings and items from within the cordoned area.

If anyone is requiring immediate and urgent access to businesses or residential properties within the cordoned area, meet at the NatWest end of the cordon, between 6pm and 7pm today, Wednesday December 11.

Westmorland & Furness Council said contractors will aim to be available to escort people in small groups on to the site. People will have to wear appropriate protective equipment.

The council added: “Please be aware, although every effort will be made to ensure that this access occurs, the unpredictable and changing nature of this situation may cause plans to change without warning.”

There is another public meeting today in the Lunesdale Hall starting at 5.30pm to allow people to hear updates and ask questions.

Firefighters were at the scene earlier today to deal with a hotspot in the building.
