Three fire crews spent five hours tackling a chimney blaze in north Cumbria.
Longtown Fire Station said its crew was called to a farm in Roweltown, near Carlisle, at around 9.30pm yesterday, Monday December 23, with crews from Carlisle East Fire Station, an aerial ladder platform and Scottish firefighters from Newcastleton.
Longtown Fire Station said: “On arrival it was apparent that this was a serious fire with the capacity to spread to the entire building if not brought under control.
“Thankfully nobody was hurt and damage was limited to the chimney with light smoke and water damage elsewhere.
“If you are going to use your fire or stove this Christmas, ask yourself when it was last swept and do my smoke alarms all work, prior to use.
“Whilst a fire is very festive, it also has the capacity to take your house or worse.”
It was one of four incidents Longtown firefighters were called out to in 24 hours.
The crew returned from the Roweltown incident at around 2.30am today, December 24, and were called out at 3.30am to a fire involving an industrial premises and vehicles on South Henry Street, Carlisle alongside colleagues from Carlisle East and West and Brampton.
The fire was extinguished by around 6.30am and the crew finally got back to Longtown at 7am.
Yesterday morning, they were called to a suspected fire in Houghton, which turned out to be a false alarm, then were called in the early evening to a suspected gas leak in Carlisle, with their colleagues from Carlisle stations.
Longtown Fire Station said: “While the premises were checked and a potential casualty treated, another resident took a fall and crews had to take care of a suspected broken wrist and head injury. Both casualties were handed to the ambulance service and the premises made safe.”
