The bomb squad were called out after a suspicious item was found on a West Cumbrian beach.
Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard Rescues Teams and Cumbria police were called to Maryport’s North Shore today, December 26, following reports of the item thought be ordnance
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said: “On initial investigation the team couldn’t identify the item.
“Photos and details were taken and relayed through our Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre Belfast Coastguard to bomb disposal of the Army’s Royal Logistics Corp based at Catterick.
“The Coastguard maintained a safety cordon and awaited their arrival this afternoon.

“Thankfully, on arrival and after further investigation by the experts, the item was deemed safe. But can you identify what it was?
“From time to time, around the shoreline of the UK and here in Cumbria, we do have old military ordnance and time expired pyrotechnics wash up or become uncovered in shifting sands on our beaches.
“While on this occasion it wasn’t explosive, the first informant who reported this did exactly the right thing and helped ensure public safety.”
