The A66 has reopened this morning, Tuesday January 7.

National Highways said at 5.22am that the road would remain closed due to heavy snow in both directions between Brough and Bowes.

But on Facebook, Cumbria police said at 6am, the A66 had reopened.

The road closure no longer appears on the National Highways travel alert list.

Eden police were called out to Stainmore yesterday to rescue the driver of a van who ignored road closed signs.

Eden police said: “The driver of this small van, who was not familiar with the area, followed the sat nav diversion to a tee, unfortunately the driver ignored the road closed sign and didn’t give a thought to the amount of snow on the road or lack of tracks ahead and became stuck.

“Thankfully with a bit of muscle and a few spades from our equipped 4×4 the driver was brought to safety before darkness fell and temperatures plummeted further.

“Motorists must obey road signs when following sat navs, the devices are not always entirely accurate.”
