Volunteer groups and drivers helped people who were involved in an collision on the A595 involving several vehicles.
It is understood up to 15 vehicles were involved in the incident at Bothel yesterday, Sunday January 5.
It resulted in the road being closed as emergency services were called to the scene to help.
West Cumbria Search and Rescue and Maryport Rescue worked alongside police, highways staff and gritters, to help the people involved, who had become stranded as a result of the incident.
The volunteer teams operate 4×4 vehicles.
West Cumbria Search and Rescue said: “All teams worked hard to reach vehicles and take people to safety and we would also like to thank the number of drivers who offered assistance to others.”
One of the drivers involved in the incident, who has asked not to be named, wanted to put their thanks on record to the drivers who helped them.
They said: “My pick-up was involved. There was two kind drivers who helped me by puling my vehicle up the steep bank with their 4x4s.
“I never got a chance to thank the second driver in the Discovery as he drove off before I could thank him. And the first driver, I’m sorry when you try to help I had it in first gear not reverse, I wasn’t thinking straight with everything that had been going on! Thank you to both.”
