Cumberland Council is aiming to recruit litter champions from the community and businesses to help keep streets clean.
It said littering had reached a critical point across the UK – with over two million pieces of rubbish dropped every day.
The authority’s new scheme – which it says is an ambitious new campaign – aims to clean up the streets and inspire a long-term shift in behaviour, empowering residents, community groups, and businesses to take charge of their surroundings.
It will provide resources, including litter pickers, hi-vis vests for adults and children, gloves, and refuse bags, plus safety guidance to support local clean-up efforts.
It is set to roll out the Litter Champions programme, which encourages community groups and businesses to arrange litter picks with council support for waste collection afterward.
It will also promote a business adoption model, encouraging local firms to take responsibility for nearby areas, linking it to staff well-being initiatives and corporate social responsibility.
The project also includes targeted clean-up activities and action days, organised by community groups, social landlords, and businesses, to help residents clear their homes, backyards, and gardens, reducing clutter and the risk of fly-tipping.
Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “Litter picking goes beyond simply cleaning up the streets; it’s a chance to engage with your neighbours, stay active, and contribute positively to your community.
“By coming together, we can create cleaner, healthier spaces and foster a sense of pride in our local area. This initiative is about more than just tidying up – it’s about building a community that cares.
“By coming together, we enhance collaboration, promote cleanliness, and support residents’ well-being. These values are central to Cumberland Council’s Plan, where health and well-being are at the heart of everything we do.”
