An Upper Eden man has admitted his German Shepherd dog caused injury to a woman while dangerously out of control in the garden of a town home.

Sixty-year-old Paul Holroyd faced one charge when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today.

Holroyd pleaded guilty to being the owner of a German Shepherd, Rebel, which caused injury to a woman while dangerously out of control in the garden of Heartstone Lodge in Kirkby Stephen.

The court heard submissions from defence lawyer Jeff Smith, who said Holroyd was regretful following the incident, which occurred on June 23 last year.

Mr Smith suggested that the court should hear from an animal behaviourist who had examined the dog in question before punishment was handed down to Holroyd, of Kirkby Stephen.

Judge Nicholas Barker adjourned the case for background information — including a probation service pre-sentence — to be prepared.

Holroyd is due to be sentenced at the crown court on March 7, and in the meantime has been granted bail.
