A dominant feature of West Cumbria’s skyline is being removed.
The 124ft chimney at Whitehaven’s West Cumberland Hospital has been part of the area’s landscape for decades.
It was part of the old boiler house and is now redundant so Workington-based Stobbarts Ltd was tasked with its removal.
Working in partnership with G&AM Lawson, the company has removed the first two segments of the chimney today, Wednesday January 15.

It is expected the final segment will be removed tomorrow.
John Stobbart said: “This was a difficult task as it had to be carried out in a confined area. The work involved two cranes and having to load the segments on to a low loader for transport while not impacting access or the operation of the hospital in any way.”
