
It was a mixture of cup and league football in the Cumberland County League on Saturday with plenty of goals.
In the Benevolent Cup quarter final, holders Maryport Athletic booked themselves a semi-final spot with a comfortable 6-0 win against Cockermouth Reserves from the league below. Ethan Weir got himself a hat trick with Logan Bosward, Stephen Cameron Moir and Aaron Hoad-Williams also getting their names on the score sheet.
As with their Reserve team, Cockermouth firsts exit the Benevolent Cup at the quarter final stage too. The Premier Division outfit were beaten 1-0 by Workington Juniors from Division One when Marc Messenger found the back of the net.
In the Premier Division, Unisun Athletic extended their lead at the top to three points after a 4-0 victory against Keswick. Shane Dorward scored twice with the other two goals coming from George Carter and James Murdoch.
Louie Elliot hit a hat trick for Wigton Harriers as they overcame local rivals Aspatria 6-1. Sam Irving and Finley Carruthers also netted for Wigton with the sixth goal coming courtesy of an own goal. Dan Pearson was Aspatria goal scorer.
The fixture featuring Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves and Whitehaven Miners Social was postponed.
In Division One, second place Mirehouse cut the gap between them and Workington Juniors to four points after a 3-0 win against Silloth. Callum Wilson bagged himself a brace with the other goal for Mirehouse coming from Bradley Conaluca.
Forth place Dearham United are now only two points behind Bransty Rangers in third after they beat them 4-2 with goals from Brandon Brown (2), Callum Foy and an own goal. Lewis McCartney and Tom Smith both found the back of the net for Bransty.
Charlie Thomson and Jameslee Reynolds both got themselves braces when Unisun Athletic Youth Development beat Whitehaven Miners Social Development 4-1 with miners goal coming from Owen Renkin.
Goals from Sam Wordsworth, Kian Hoey and Leo Brennan with a double helped Windscale Reserves to a 4-2 victory against Whitehaven Reserves. Joe Martin and Ben Powell both provided Whitehaven’s goals.
On Wednesday evening, hopefully it’s third time lucky for Bransty Rangers and Wigton Harriers as they both meet at the Copeland Stadium for their Benevolent Cup quarter final tie, kick off is 7pm.
