A Cumbrian charity has launched a £30,000 appeal to secure the future of its life-changing scheme.
Ragtag Arts and Community Scrapstore, based in Kendal, has launched the ReMake Appeal to save its ReMake volunteer scheme.
The programme empowers people with learning difficulties to gain workplace skills, confidence, and a sense of community.
Ragtags is calling on local businesses to join the effort by becoming sponsors, providing critical funding that will directly impact the lives of 30 volunteers who rely on the scheme to build a brighter future.
The charity said that for individuals with learning difficulties, the lack of accessible workplace opportunities can be a major barrier to independence and wellbeing.
ReMake is bridging this gap by providing a safe, supportive environment where participants gain essential skills and experience.
Emily Dewhurst, executive director of Ragtags, said: “As mental health continues to be a national concern, studies show that being in work
significantly improves wellbeing through social interaction and a sense of purpose.

“ReMake addresses this need while paving the way for a more inclusive workforce in Cumbria.
The programme welcomes students from local schools and adults with learning difficulties who volunteer independently.
Tasks such as sorting materials, organising the scrapstore, and assisting with creative activities are tailored to their abilities, ensuring every volunteer
can thrive, the charity said.
Andy Smith, a teacher at Sandgate School, said: “Volunteering at Ragtag allows my students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-life settings, boosting their confidence and social skills.”
Until now, Ragtags has relied on grants to fund the ReMake scheme, but to sustain and expand this life-changing programme, it urgently needed local support, it said.
The ReMake Appeal invites individuals and businesses to become sponsors, with corporate packages starting at £500.
Emily said: “By becoming a ReMake sponsor, you’re not just supporting a random project – you’re transforming local lives, fostering inclusion and creating opportunities that see more disabled people in the workplace.”
