Fundraising dinner in memory of Barrow woman

A fundraising dinner will be held in memory of a Barrow woman to help support people with cancer.

Vicki Johnson is holding the event at the town’s Abbey House Hotel on March 22 for her mum, Linda, who died in March 2023.

The event will raise funds for The Bay Hospitals Charity’s Oncology Unit at Furness General Hospital and Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Linda’s cancer journey began over 20 years ago when she was treated for breast cancer.

After many years in remission, her cancer returned in 2021 as stage 4.

Despite the diagnosis, Linda faced her illness with immense courage and dignity.

She received care at Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston, where she stayed with her husband to avoid daily travel, and at FGH, where her treatment ensured precious time with her family.

Linda’s final hours were spent in The Maple Suite at Furness General Hospital, an end of life suite funded by Rosemere, which allowed her privacy and dignity.

Last year’s inaugural dinner raised over £7,000, contributing to the renovation of oncology treatment rooms at Furness General Hospital.

This year’s event will include a two-course meal, West End entertainment, a disco, an auction, a raffle, and a themed bingo game in tribute to Linda’s weekly tradition with her sisters.

Vicki said: “I hope lots of people are able to join us in March and help raise funds for these worthwhile charities, who provide extra support and care to patients when they need it most. We raised £7,000 last year and it would be great to beat that this year!”
