All major steelwork on a central bridge in the Carlisle Southern Link Road has been completed.
Cumberland Council said the project’s largest structure – Caldew Crossing – has had had 18 steel beams installed to complete its major steelwork.
Funded by Homes England, the project aims to enhance east-to-west connectivity, reduce congestion in Carlisle city centre, and unlock the delivery of St. Cuthbert’s Garden Village.
The centrepiece of the project is the crossing which crosses the River Caldew. The crossing is 170 metre in length, 18 metres in width and 20 metres high.
Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “This road will change the landscape of Carlisle; the potential that will unveil itself when the road opens in terms of new development opportunities, as well as easing the pressure on the city centre traffic network, is incredibly exciting.
“Completion of this milestone on the construction of the Caldew Crossing is fantastic, and I want to thank the team on the ground for their hard work and effort to get us to this point. This is no small challenge, and I look forward to further updates on its progress as we move towards completion.
“I was incredibly proud to see this work first-hand to thank and meet some of the team who have been working on delivering the structure for many months. As always, this work has been delivered safely and in a collaborative and integrated manner with all partners involved. ”
Cumberland Council has also confirmed that the Cummersdale to Dalston footpath has reopened to the public as normal.
