The winner of the BBC’s Great British Menu has been revealed.

Two Cumbrian chefs – James Hill and Jack Bond – were among the four culinary whizzes battling to cook for the show’s finale.

Also taking part were Livia Alarcon, of Liverpool and Eddie Shepherd, of Manchester.

The North West final was broadcast last night and the winner was revealed as Lake District chef Jack Bond.

He now goes forward to finals week for the chance to take part in the series banquet at Blenheim Palace.

Jack is head chef and co-owner of The Cottage in the Wood at Whinlatter, near Keswick.

It was the 33-year-old’s first Great British Menu.

Prior to the show being broadcast, he said: “’I’ve frequently thought about putting myself forward to take part in Great British Menu, but for some reason never got round to it.

“However, that all changed when I became a dad in 2024, as well as buying The Cottage in the Wood with my wife Beth.

“Both of those momentous events gave me the impetus to put my name in the hat and push myself beyond my comfort zone.”

Carlisle-born James, head chef and owner of The Oak at Curthwaite, has built a reputation for excellence in the industry and is a classically trained two AA rosette holder, known for his passion for showcasing local produce with Cumbrian flair.

He is also a true champion of the Cumbrian region and has owned and operated a number of restaurants in the area, including the Michelin-rated Lounge on the Green, which cemented his status as a leading figure in the culinary world.

Prior to the show being broadcast, he said: “To be asked to star on such a renowned programme was a great privilege.

“When I got the call, I could only say yes – it’s an incredible opportunity to represent the North West and share my passion for food with the nation.”

This year’s theme is Great Britons, which will see the chefs draw inspiration from important people, who have come from their area, from ancient and modern history as they develop their menus, with the best being showcased at the banquet marking 20 years of the Great British Menu.

The North West heats are available on iPlayer.
