A man has appeared in court after a stabbing on a residential Wigton road left the alleged victim with a gaping leg wound and needing surgery.
Police issued a public appeal for information last Monday after officers attended an incident in the town which was reported to have happened at around 2.15am.
The victim suffered a significant leg injury — consistent with a stab wound — in the area of Kirkland Road.
The injured man was taken to hospital and initially detained in a stable condition. He was later released.
This afternoon, 30-year-old Louie Holmes appeared at Carlisle Magistrates Court, charged in connection with the incident.
Holmes faces two charges. One alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously wounded a man, with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm, on February 3.
A second charge alleges the illegal possession of a bladed article — a knife — in Kirkland Meadows in Wigton, on the same date.
During a 15-minute court hearing, Holmes spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and to say he was currently of no fixed abode.
No pleas were entered to either charge.
Prosecutor Lee Dacre alleged that the injured man had been stabbed with a kitchen knife, suffering a 10cm gaping wound to his right thigh.
There had been a substantial amount of blood at the scene, said Mr Dacre.
An ambulance was called and the injured man was taken to hospital where he had undergone surgery.
Magistrates committed Holmes’ case to Carlisle Crown Court. He is due to appear there in front of a judge on March 10.
In the meantime he was remanded in custody after an application for bail was refused by the bench.
A 27-year-old man arrested in connection with last Monday’s incident, from Aspatria, remains on police bail.
