A group of Carlisle College students have become litter champions to help keep city streets clean.
Cumberland Council’s new campaign aims to tackle litter and the college is one of the organisations that has stepped forward to take part.
The Litter Champions campaign provides practical resources, including litter pickers, high-vis vests for adults and children, gloves, and refuse bags, plus safety guidance to support local clean-up efforts.
A business adoption model is being promoted, encouraging local businesses to take responsibility for their nearby areas as part of staff well-being initiatives and corporate social responsibility efforts.
The project also includes targeted clean-up activities and action days, organised by community groups, social landlords, and businesses.
Ann Ferguson, supported learning lecturer at Carlisle College, said: “This was our first official litter pick. Supported Internship students and New Horizon students joined forces to clear the path from Strand Road, through Rickerby Park, and to The Sands Centre.
“We left our three bags of rubbish by the bin opposite DFS, where the council collected them. It was a great experience for our students, encouraging teamwork and responsibility while making a visible difference in our community.”
