Carlisle’s Devonshire Street is set to get improved lighting as part of wider revamp plans.
Plans to remove six existing wall-mounted lights and replace them with modern architectural lighting were approved yesterday by Cumberland Council’s planning committee.
It said the outdated LED lamp units and their cabling and junction boxes will be fully replaced with a new system that will feature external LED lighting bars that aim to highlight the upper floors of buildings along the street.
The council added that the new lighting will also aim to highlight architectural details such as moulding, archways, and windows, up to two storeys high. Additional cabling will also be installed to support the new lighting system.
Installation of the new lighting will take place overnight, from Sunday 2 March for one week, between 8.00pm and 5.00am.
During these hours the street will be closed to vehicles, but it will reopen by 5.00am each day.
A full diversion route will be in place, clearly marked with signage, and the street will remain open for pedestrians with walkways provided.
The new lighting is being funded by the UK Government’s Future High Street Fund, £2,040,000 via Carlisle Future High Street and United Utilities Green Recovery Funding £250,000.
It comes as part of a wider and ongoing revamp of Devonshire Street which has created wider pavements for accessibility, new seating and greenery, a single-lane carriageway in a bid to improve traffic and designated loading bays for local businesses.
The council said the new lighting will be one of the revamped street’s finishing touches.
