
It’s hotting up as the Cumberland County League Premier Division title race approaches the finish line.
Maryport Athletic got a vital 3-0 victory against Unisun Athletic to leapfrog them into second place.
Ciaran Booty, Ethan Weir and Logan Bosward all scored for Maryport to keep them unbeaten in the league and takes them four points behind Cockermouth who occupied top spot with two games in hand.
This result now means Unisun title hopes are effectively over as they sit in third with a six point gap between them and league leaders Cockermouth with two games remaining for Carlisle base Unisun.
The other Premier Division match between Whitehaven Miners Social and Wigton Harriers was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Over in Division One, all three matches played had five goals scored in them.
Workington Juniors who were crowned champions last weekend continued their brilliant form by recording a 5-0 win against Cockermouth Reserves. Chad Grisdale got himself a hat trick with the other goals being provided by Eli Demetriou and Jack Dunstan.
Dearham United who sit in fourth suffered a narrow defeat to Windscale Reserves who occupied seventh spot despite Alfie Green bagging himself a brace for Dearham. Rob Davidson, Leo Brennan and Dawson Webster all scored to help claim victory for Windscale.
Charlie Thomson netted twice for Unisun Athletic Youth Development to help them to a 5-0 win against bottom of the table Silloth.
Unisun, who started the day in sixth position in the league also had Paul Irving and Harvie Aldersey find the back of the net for them to move them up the table into fifth. Their other goal came from an own goal.
The Whitehaven Cup kicked off on Saturday with Aspatria who are second bottom in the Premier Division but are enjoying good runs in the cup competitions welcomed Whitehaven Miners Social Development from Division One.
Aspatria soon put any concerns of an upset to rest as they won 9-0 thanks to a double from Malcom Graham with Logan Dixon, Andrew Trestianu, Liam Parker, Harry Creighton, Dale Gebbie, Matthew Rudd and Shaun Smith all hitting the target too.
The other Whitehaven Cup Round One tie between Keswick and Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves and also Bransty Rangers v Mirehouse in the League Cup 1 were postponed due to a waterlogged pitches.
Next Saturday sees the second round of the Whitehaven Cup take up the full County League schedule with all matches kicking off at 2pm.
