A Wigton man who threw a TV at his sister has been ordered to complete unpaid work in the community as part of his sentence.
Carlisle’s magistrates’ court heard how police attended an address in the Wigton area having been alerted to an incident on September 14 last year.
A prosecutor said it emerged that Lawrence Coulthard, 43 had picked up a television and thrown it at his sister. It hit her on the arm, causing some bruising.
Officers observed the sister outside the property and saw her injury.
Coulthard was found inside the property and arrested for the offence. He made full admissions during an interview.
He spoke of arguing about tobacco with his sibling, who had declined to provide a formal statement to police. He admitted a charge of assault by beating in court and was sentenced today.
Defence solicitor Duncan Campbell, mitigating, said a pre-sentence report prepared by a probation officer ahead of the hearing gave some helpful background about the incident.
“There is a fair and good chance of rehabilitation,” said Mr Campbell of the report’s recommendations.
Of Coulthard’s comments in interview after the assault, the solicitor said to magistrates: “He was fully co-operative with the police and made full admissions. If he hadn’t have made full admissions, there would be no case. He couldn’t have done more to accept his guilty in this particular matter.”
Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order.
Coulthard, of Throstle Avenue, Wigton, must complete 60 hours’ community service and also rehabilitation work with the probation service. He must also pay £85 prosecution costs and a £114 mandatory surcharge.
