A charity night will be held this weekend for a West Cumbrian woman who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Mel James runs the Ani-Mel animal sanctuary in Mawbray and is an officer with West Cumbria Search and Rescue.

Her colleagues at West Cumbria Search and Rescue set up a fundraising page for her following her diagnosis of cervical cancer, to help with running costs of the sanctuary.

Now, a charity night will be held on Saturday, March 1, at the Bees Knees in Workington.

West Cumbria Search and Rescue said: ” Mel is dedicated to saving and rehabilitation of animals and we are raising funds to help Mel with the cost of her travel and animal sanctuary she set up on her own.

“This is really close to Mel’s heart. Mel puts everyone else first but we need Mel to recover and not have to worry about the animals and the cost of travel for her treatment.

“Donations will be collected through out the evening and various raffles. There will be live music and a drag queen we would like to take this opportunity as an organisation to thank everyone for their continued support.”
