A Workington road is set to close for up to 10 days for improvements.

Cumberland Council said it was carrying out maintenance on the A597 – Mossbay Road – to prevent long-term deterioration.

Cracking has been detected in the road surface, which if left untreated risked further deterioration to its integrity, the authority said.

Work is due to begin on Monday, March 17, by DSD Construction.

Improvements include road network repairs, drainage repairs and a refresh of road markings.

The project will be organised in phases, using temporary traffic lights and road closures as follows:

  • Phase 1 – Mossbay Road, from the mini roundabout at Asda to Railbank Drive junction. The work will be under a road closure, with access to Asda available via Salterbeck Road.
  • Phase 2 – Mini roundabout involves a road closure and restricted working hours between 10pm and 6am.

Full access will be available for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians, and dismounted cyclists throughout the work.

The council has asked residents to move their vehicles from the work area between 7.30am and 5.30pm during the first phase to allow the team to carry out the works as efficiently and safely as possible.

Updates about temporary bus stop relocations will be posted at affected stops. Passengers with bus route questions are encouraged to contact Stagecoach directly.
