People who need extra collections of their garden waste in north and West Cumbria will be charged an extra £40 per bin per year.

Cumberland Council will roll out the change from week commencing March 31.

All householders with garden waste bins will continue to have one bin collected every fortnight.

There will however be a yearly charge of £40 per additional bin that residents request to be collected.

Residents can sign up to a maximum of three additional garden bin collections per fortnight, per household.

It said it was consistent with the approach in the former Copeland area of the authority’s footprint.

Collections are fortnightly between March and November.

Stickers will be supplied for the additional bins once the payment has been processed.

Cumberland Council said: “The council has reviewed their collection service, and the changes provide a fairer and more efficient service.”

Following a public consultation and a comprehensive review of the current arrangements, Cumberland Council will also introduce the following:
