£118,000 boost for ‘once in a generation’ revamp of Penrith Players’ home

Plans to redevelop the home of Penrith Players have been given an £118,000 boost.

The amateur dramatics group has been based at the Penrith Playhouse since 1998 and said in 2022, the group’s 100th anniversary, they decided on a full redevelopment project for the venue.

Now, they have found out they have won £118,000 in funding from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

Roger Bird, chair of the Players, said: “The Players are extremely grateful for this grant funding.

“We also appreciate the support initially of Penrith Town Council and then Westmorland and Furness Council in the application process.

“The Players have also benefited from support for our bid from many other local arts organisations over the last few years.”

The project will be carried out in stages from February to September next year.

Mike Head one of the main instigators of the project, said: “Installing new, state of the art retractable seating means we can create a fully flexible theatre and performance space.

“The space can adapted to a variety of productions and events.

“For instance, for the first time this will allow us host cabaret style events, dance performances and put on theatre in the round. With the new flexibility, we plan to increase the number and of type of events at the Playhouse enhancing our current programme.”

As part of improving the auditorium, new LED lighting is being installed, which will also reduce the theatre’s carbon footprint, Penrith Players said.

The bar area will also be upgraded and ventilation improved. Some of the funding will also be used to improve external signs and the entrance area.
