A young Cumbrian golfer has had a fantastic start to her 2025 season.
Nine-year-old Florence Martindale, who attends Newbarns Primary School in Barrow, has already made a splash in an international competition in Marbella.
Now, at the Spring Medal held at Barrow Golf Club on Sunday, Florence set out to break 90 – a big milestone for any young player.
Not only did she achieve it, but she did so in emphatic fashion, carding an 85 gross/61 nett to win the competition. By the next morning, her handicap had dropped to 17.9.
Just a few days later, Florence was back on course at Dunnerholme Golf Club, competing in a Faldo Futures qualifier. She delivered another impressive performance, shooting level par, winning her age group, and finishing top of the leaderboard overall across all categories.
Florence has now booked her place in the regional finals this May, where she’ll be competing against some of the best young players in the country.
Chris North, CEO of The Big Golf Company, one of Florence’s local supporters and sponsor, said: “Florence’s achievements so far this year are being quietly supported by those who believe in her journey – including local individuals and organisations who are proud to see her flourishing on the national stage.
“Florence has had an outstanding start to the season. Her determination, focus, and love for the game are clear to see, and she’s a brilliant ambassador for junior golf in the region.
“Cumbria will be behind Florence as she continues her exciting journey – and there’s no doubt that this is just the beginning. Well done Florence – we’re all cheering you on!”
