Controversial former Workington Reds chairman Bill Wilson has died aged 69.
He died on Tuesday following a long illness.
Wilson had a rollercoaster two-year spell as Workington chairman during which time he oversaw the club’s promotion as champions of the North West Trains League under the management of Peter Hampton.
But he had brought in a number of high profile ex-League players, the most successful of which was Paul Stewart, the former Man City, Liverpool, Spurs and England star.
The club was deep in debt when he left and a local consortium who took over had to work hard to pull it back from the brink.
Carlisle-born Wilson, who owned three holiday parks in the region, moved to Devon in 2003.
He was appointed chairman of Barnstable Town in January 2022.
In a statement, Barnstable Town said: “It is with great regret that we announce chairman Bill Wilson passed away peacefully.
“There will be a minute’s applause in his memory before our final home game of the season against Ilfracombe Town. A further statement will follow addressing how this will affect the running of the club.”
