Seven fire crews tackled a scrapyard fire in Carlisle.
The fire was at Michael Douglas Auto Salvage on Stainton Road and firefighters were called to the scene at around 1.35pm yesterday, Thursday April 10 and were still there four hours later.
Cumbria police closed the road nearby as firefighters continued to bring the blaze under control.
The seven crews were called in from across north Cumbria.
The fire involved scrap cars and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said a multi-agency response had been mobilised.
Nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed by Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service and people were asked to avoid the area.
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said: “We would like to extend our thanks to the public for following our advice and avoiding the area during this incident, which helps our crews to get on with their job.”
It added that it had informed Network Rail due to the fire’s proximity to the railway line.
