Cumbria police have issued an update on Operation Spotlight – its campaign to crack down on bad behaviour on the county’s roads.

Officers responded to a report of someone riding a scooter or a moped erratically in Smithfield, near Carlisle, on Saturday night.

The caller suspected the rider may have been drunk.

Officers attended, found the scooter outside a property and arrested the suspected rider who then failed to provide a specimen for analysis and was arrested and charged. He is due to appear in court later this month.

In the early hours of Sunday in Barrow, police spotted a car swerving in the road. The driver got out of the car and ran before officers caught up with him.

He failed a breath test and was arrested for drink driving.

He’s since been charged with drink driving and possession of cocaine and is due in court later this month.

Operation Spotlight targets the Fatal Four – speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs.

Cumbria police is carrying out a combination of enforcement activity, engagement and educational work aimed at raising awareness of these most common dangerous road behaviours.
