More arrests have been made as part of Cumbria police’s crackdown on unfit drivers on the county’s roads.
Operation Spotlight is a month-long campaign aimed at raising awareness of the most common dangerous road behaviours – the Fatal Four.
The Fatal Four – speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs – are the most common causes of deaths on the roads.
Officers stopped a car at Killington Services on the M6 yesterday afternoon.
They could smell cannabis so conducted a drugs wipe test, which the driver failed and they also found cannabis in the car.
The driver was arrested for offences including drug-driving and possession of cannabis. He was subsequently released under investigation.
Police also spotted a driver on their mobile phone in the Warwick Road area of Carlisle yesterday.
He was stopped, failed a roadside drug test for cannabis and was arrested. He has been released under investigation.
Officers stopped a driver at Tebay Services on the M6 yesterday evening. He failed a drugs wipe for cannabis and was arrested.
He was charged after failing to provide a specimen for analysis while in custody. He was also charged with possession of cannabis and has been bailed to attend court next month.
Police were called to a collision in Bowness-on-Windermere in the early hours of today, April 15, where the car was on its roof.
Cumbria police said its officers had reason to suspect the driver had been drinking. However, he refused a breath test.
Cumbria police added: “He will shortly be receiving a postal charge for failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and a court date.”
