First senior victory of season for Mel at St Helena

Tuesday saw a return to St Helena where 34 hounds turned out over the three-course trail.

Up first were the Seniors where nine lined up to be slipped and Stephen Riley and Isla Hetherington’s Cautious was sent off as the favourite.

Reports came in from the second road crossing and it was Countess Ava for James and Ava McClellan who was leading the race ahead of Cautious.

On the back fell Cautious had a length on Mel for Les and Graham Reid and Ellie Napier, the pair had broke clear from James and Ava McClellan’s Baroness Ava.

The hounds then came back into sight again it was Mel who was leading ahead of Cautious and Baroness Ava, once onto the finish Mel came away to claim her first Senior victory of the season with Cautious in second and Baroness Ava in third.

Up next were the Pups with 11 runners, Zoya and Maggie were sent off as the favourites.

Kennel mates Maggie for Les and Graham Reid, Erin Rowlandson, Barbara Jones and Steven Walker and Brown Sugar for Graham and Les Reid and Ellie Napier led but when the hounds were seen again it was Maggie leading the race and Foxparke Pip Pip for Team Foxparke and Donald Hodgson in second, before going into the front as they went out of sight again.

Once down the side of the wood Maggie had developed a five-yard lead on Foxparke Pip Pip still in contention with Stephen Irving and Caroline Graham’s Zoya in third.

Once they turned onto the finish all six hounds had bunched up and Maggie got the win by a head from Zoya, Jonty and Evie Moore and Jack Thompson’s two hounds Nellie’s Joy and Nellie’s Pride finished in third and fourth with Minnie finishing in fifth. The final ticket went to Foxparke Pip Pip.

The final race of the evening was the All-In where 14 took to the trail. Glamorous Ava and Duchess Ava for James and Ava McClellan with Team Foxparke’s Foxparke Sidekick led the race the whole way round.

Once onto the finish Glamorous Ava got the win by a head from Duchess Ava, Foxparke Sidekick and Foxparke Elliot’s Lad finished in third and fourth.

Hound trailing resumes today, Thursday, April 17 at Oulton. Hounds are slipped at 5.30pm.
