A pensioner has appeared in court accused of causing serious injury to a motorcyclist by driving carelessly on the A66.
David George-Plunkett, 77, faces one charge which arises out of an incident on Friday September 27 last year.
This alleges that George-Plunkett caused serious injury to Philip Rimmer by driving a Mercedes-Benz SLK vehicle without due care and attention, on the A66 in the area of Whitbarrow.
George-Plunkett appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning. During a brief hearing in front of a deputy district judge, he opted not to enter a plea to the charge at this stage.
The prosecution alleged that a collision occurred as George-Plunkett’s vehicle emerged from a minor road on to the A66.
The deputy district judge concluded that the case was suitable to be dealt with in the magistrates’ court. George-Plunkett instead elected, as is his legal right, for the case to be heard at Carlisle Crown Court.
George-Plunkett, of Melkinmere House, Troutbeck, near Penrith, is due to appear there in front of a judge, for a plea and case management hearing, on May 21.
In the meantime he has been granted unconditional bail.
