
Four drivers – including a HGV driver using a mobile phone – were arrested on the M6 yesterday as police continue to crack down on dangerous behaviour on the roads.
Cumbria police is running a month-long campaign, Operation Spotlight, to target those speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs.
Yesterday, officers arrested four drivers following stops on the M6 near Carlisle.
At 1.50pm, a van driver from Lancashire stopped on M6 north of Carlisle. He failed a drugs wipe for cannabis and was arrested. He was charged with drug driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He is due in court next month.
At 2.45pm police stopped a driver on the M6 south of Carlisle and arrested him on suspicion of drug driving after he failed a drugs wipe. He was released under investigation to allow time for blood test results.
At 8.10pm a driver was stopped on M6 north of Carlisle. He failed a drugs wipe for cannabis and was released under investigation to allow time for blood test results.
At 8.45pm officers spotted a HGV driver on his phone on the M6 south of Carlisle.
They stopped him and he failed a drugs wipe for cannabis. He was released under investigation having been arrested for offences including drug driving and possession of drugs.
