A £1 million upgrade of Carlisle’s power network is underway.
Electricity North West is investing the cash in the underground electricity infrastructure, which it said would improve reliability.
Work is progressing across Bridge Street as teams are replacing and diverting 1km of underground electricity cables.
Once completed, more than 5,000 homes and businesses were expected to benefit from the new electricity supply, the firm said.
Charlotte Pearson, who is overseeing the project in Carlisle for Electricity North West, said: “As the region’s power network operator, we always want to provide the best service for our customers.
“The investment we are making is significant, upgrading the infrastructure will not only attract new businesses and investment, but firms will be able to adopt low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles.”
Already, 500m of underground duct – what the cable sits in – has been installed and once teams have completed work on Bridge Street, work continue towards Devonshire Walk and Viaduct Estate Road.
Electricity North West delivered letters to homes and businesses in the area prior to work starting.
Traffic management including temporary traffic lights, lane closures and road closures are being used so teams can work safely.
Work is expected to be completed by June and updates will be provided throughout the project.
