A bid to restore Carlisle’s Turkish Baths continues – and people can find out more at a meeting this week.
The Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths are inviting people to an open meeting on Saturday, May 10, at the Old Town Hall to update on progress and share the plans for how the 113-year-old Turkish Baths could be restored and refurbished.
“Carlisle has the last fully operational Turkish Baths in the North West, and we believe they can be developed to become a major tourist attraction and continue to support the health and wellbeing of local people,” said Julie Minns, chair of the Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths.
“As a small group of volunteers, the scale of what we are trying to achieve is huge – but we share the same ambition and passion as the members of the City
Corporation who voted to build Public and Turkish Baths for Carlisle almost 140 years ago.
“We’re sure that the baths can play an important role in the future of our city and are determined that they will not join the long list of historical buildings that Carlisle has already lost.”
The Friends are also looking to expand the number of volunteers and develop the charitable trustee board by recruiting new members.
The Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths became a CIO charity in April 2022 and has a board of trustees who play an active hands-on part in the operation and activities of the organisation.
