A new mayor has been elected for Workington.
David Farrar will represent the town for 2025 to 2026 in the civic role, following Workington Town Council’s annual meeting last week.
His consort is Councillor Allan Hodgson, and deputy mayor is Sue Fryer.
In his inaugural speech, Councillor Farrar outlined his vision for a more connected and compassionate Workington.
His charities are West Cumberland Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit, Fit4Life Health and Rehabilitation Gym, and Autism Support Allerdale and Copeland.
He said: “It is with deep pride and a profound sense of duty that I accept this honour. We look ahead with a shared ambition – to make Workington not just a place we live in, but a place we believe in.”
Community development features strongly in the mayor’s agenda, with plans for new community gardens, enhanced allotment sites, and improved play areas with accessible equipment, starting at Harrington Marina. Monthly community litter picks will continue on the last Wednesday of every month.

The mayor also emphasised the importance of international relations, particularly with twin towns Selm in Germany and Val-de-Reuil in France.
He recently returned from an official visit to Sztum in Poland, where he participated in their 234th constitution day celebrations.
Father Philip Conner, parish priest of Christ the Good Shepherd parish and foundation governor of St Joseph’s Catholic High School, will serve as the mayor’s chaplain for the year.
Outgoing mayor Neil Schofield raised over £2,000 for his chosen charities.
He presented his final awards to:
- Business Hero of the Year: No Name Travel Ltd
- Volunteer of the Year: Margaret McIntyre
- Outstanding Achievement: Andy’s Man Club
- Sports Club of the Year: Workington Town Women FC
