A Cumbrian donkey sanctuary is asking people to help support its vital work.
Barnhill Donkeys Retreat, near Shap, has been rescuing and rehoming donkeys since opening its doors in 2003.
It is currently looking after 16 donkeys, which had all been abused.
The rescue centre relies on donations to carry out its work.
The donkeys are all in very poor health when they arrive and it is the sanctuary’s work to nurse them back to health.
This video shows a donkey and her foal the sanctuary recently took in and the video was taken by one of the vets from Penrith’s Frame Swift and Partners the day she arrived.
The sanctuary said: “Mum, when she arrived, could not walk. She was crippled. Her owner had trimmed her feet themselves and trimmed her toes so short she was in agony; she is now on the road to recovery which will take time
“All of this costs money, a lot of money, it is free to visit, they rely completely on donations to keep running.
“While most of the donkeys that arrive find new forever homes, some will always stay, and we will care for them long term and we are always grateful for donations and support.”
The sanctuary is open Monday to Friday 10am to noon.
Barnhill Donkeys Retreat will be at The Westmorland Dales Festival on July 26 and 27 and at Shap farmers market in August.
